On these chilly mornings I find myself reaching again and again for a cardigan I knit last year in Columbia 2-Ply from Imperial Stock Ranch. Located in north central Oregon, Imperial Stock produces this worsted-weight yarn, on an 1870s spinning mule. The mule spinner creates a lofty and light yarn that retains heat very well. The yarn has great texture and character but still has a nice, soft hand.

Are You Ready to Knitalong?

Our newest knitalong begins this Saturday, September 24, at 5 pm. We considered choosing from a new designer but we all loved Vonica, by Chicknits, so much that we decided it had to be our fall project. Bonne Marie Burns, the designer behind Chicknits, also created Cassidy, our spring knitalong pattern.

Vonica is an extremely flattering, open-front cardigan with a simple lace pattern and interesting construction. Knit in a light worsted or DK yarn, it's a great lightweight sweater that will get a lot of wear in our Pacific Northwest weather. We have knit our shop sample in Rowan Felted Tweed. It's soft and fluffy but still shows off the lace pattern nicely.

To participate in our knitalong simply come by the shop and pick up the Vonica pattern and select your yarn. Then join us for our kickoff celebration on Saturday for prizes and pattern support. Continue at our on-going pattern support sessions (dates and times are on our Classes page). Be sure to come to the final wrap up party on January 7 to be included in our grand prize drawing.

Our new classes for fall are available on our website. Our Cabled Earflap Hat teaches basic cabling and hat construction. Cables often mystify newer knitters with their seemingly intricate twists and turns but in reality they are very simple. Beginner knitters can conquer fear of circular needles and double points while learning just how quick and satisfying knitting a hat can be.

A Note on Charity Knitting

Patty Cogen is one of our most devoted customers. Several years ago she came to us asking if she could organize a charity knitting (or crocheting) group to come meet at the shop on Thursdays from noon to 2 p.m. We said sure and the group has become a fixture at the shop.

Here is a note from Patty about her experience knitting for charity.

Hi, I'm Patty and I've made so many top-down sweaters that my name on Ravelry is Topdownsweatrgirl. I decided to knit for charity for two reasons:

First, everyone in my family has enough sweaters for several life times; and two, I can try out new patterns and not worry about the size being right for a specific
person. Any size sweater is great for someone who needs it.

I started the Thursday afternoon charity knit session at Fiber Gallery and the conversation has kept me coming back. Customers have been found eavesdropping on the charity knitting group. Some days it's comedy, other days it's tragedy--whatever is discussed is always interesting or from a unique point of view. Oh, yeah, we also knit for charity.

We started knitting sweaters for homeless teens who were moving into transitional housing with their parents. After that we knit hats for premie babies--those knit up in a flick of an eye.

Next we did a bunch of hats for one of the First People's Nation that one of our knitters was involved with. It seems that everyone has a different charity and we rotate knitting for them. But don't think of this group as rigid. You can knit any darn thing you want in this group--sometimes I'm the only one knitting for charity, but I get lots of company from those who are knitting a new lace shawl for themselves, a outfit for their husband's friend's son's new baby, or a pair of fingerless gloves for mom's 80th birthday.

Just in time for Earth Day, a lovely, free pattern in a yarn made exclusively from recycled materials. Remix, from Berroco, is a blend of Nylon, Cotton, Acrylic, Silk and Linen that is collected from the textile industry, sorted by fiber and color and shredded then it is spun into new yarn. Since the fibers are already dyed the process conserves water as well.

Gaia, a short sleeve, lace-bodiced, cardigan is nearly seamless and uses a top-down, short-row technique to knit the sleeves.

Dyeing as if the Earth Mattered

The Fiber Gallery and Earthues are collaborating once again to offer yet another colorful workshop experience at the Earthues studio in Ballard.

There are two phases to this workshop. We will be dyeing three types of yarns using two-dye combinations in each of four dye baths. We will be using plant dye extracts in their powdered form. The extracts make it easier to combine dyes to create unique color mixtures not readily available in the marketplace. We will mix two dye extract combinations into each of four dye kettles to create exotic colors on a variety of yarn types. Some of the combinations include: Osage orange (golden-yellow) combined with Logwood (warm grey) to create a soft green; Lac (umbered red) combined with Weld (acid yellow) to create a spicy orange; Cochineal (clear blue-based red) combined with cream of tartar to create a brilliant vermilion; and Logwood Purple (bright red-purple) combined with Madder (rich orange red) to create a unique red-purple

The second segment of the workshop will include a brief introduction to indigo dyeing. Everyone will have an opportunity to dip their skeins of yarn into the blues! Complete written instructions in the form of a notebook will be provided as well as a brief lecture and demonstration of the indigo process.
